Kevin Garnett To Start All-Star Game
January 23, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

From Boston.com:
Garnett was voted a starter for the Feb. 15 extravaganza in Phoenix. He was eighth overall in the fan voting, named on 2,066,833 ballots.
The Eastern Conference starters will be forwards Garnett, a 12-time All-Star, and LeBron James (Cleveland); guards Allen Iverson (Detroit) and Dwyane Wade (Miami); and center Dwight Howard (Orlando). Other Celtics among the top 10 in voting at their positions were center Kendrick Perkins (second), forward Paul Pierce (fourth), and guard Ray Allen (sixth). The remainder of the All-Star rosters will be determined by the coaches, which could make Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo a contender, though he was not among the top 11 guards in fan voting.

Would You Make This Deal ?
January 12, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

Here’s an interesting trade idea from Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated:
One potential solution to Boston’s perimeter-shooting problems is languishing in Toronto: forward Jason Kapono. Consider this deal: Boston sends Brian Scalabrine (who has one year remaining on his contract), Eddie House (who has a player option for 2009-10) and a conditional draft pick to Toronto for Kapono. The trade frees the Raptors from Kapono’s contract (which runs through the ’10-11 season) and gives them coveted cap space to re-sign Chris Bosh in ’10 and acquire some talent to play around him.
In Kapono, Boston would get a career 46 percent shooter from three-point range. Though a below-average defender, Kapono has championship experience (he was on Miami’s 2006 title team) and is regarded as a solid locker-room guy. And since Toronto has the roster spot to absorb a two-for-one deal, Boston would be free to bring in another backup point guard — Damon Stoudamire, Eddie Gill and Doc Rivers fave Darrell Armstrong are available — or wait to see if the Raptors, hoping to get a break on House’s player option, negotiate a buyout with House.
This trade wouldn’t preclude Boston from searching for a backup center, either. The Celtics could use the vacant roster spot created in the Kapono trade or cut Sam Cassell if a big man becomes available via buyout after the Feb. 19 trade deadline.
Celtics Tried To Acquire J.J. Redick
January 12, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

From Yahoo Sports:
What GM Danny Ainge wants is a shooter off the bench, but he’s struggling to find one. League sources say he made a bid for the Orlando Magic’s J.J. Redick recently, a guard he’s long coveted, but an offer of J.R. Giddens and Gabe Pruitt couldn’t come close to prying Redick. What’s more, Orlando isn’t motivated to fortify the Celtics. Suddenly, the Magic believe they can beat Boston. League executives say Ainge has become more persistent this week in searching out deals, but as a Western Conference executive said, “He just doesn’t have any players that anyone wants.”
Celtics Call-Up Walker And Giddens
January 9, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

From Boston.com:
The Celtics announced today that they have recalled rookie guard J.R. Giddens and rookie forward Bill Walker from their NBA Development League affiliate Utah Flash.
Giddens appeared in 13 games for the Flash averaging 17.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.2 rebounds, 1.46 steals, a team-high 1.54 blocks all in a team-high 37.6 minutes per game. Giddens was ranked 20th in the NBDL in scoring, 13th in field goal percentage (53.5%) and seventh in blocks. The former New Mexico Lobo was the selected by the Celtics with the 30th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.
Walker appeared in 15 games for the Flash averaging a team-high 18.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.33 steals in 30.5 minutes per game. Walker was ranked 11th in the NBDL in scoring and sixth in field goal percentage (55.7%). The former Kansas State Wildcat was acquired in a draft night trade with the Washington Wizards in exchange for cash considerations.
Celtics guard Tony Allen is expected to be out at least the next two games with a right ankle sprain and did not take the team plane on the two-game road trip. Allen will miss his third straight game against Cleveland tomorrow night.
What’s Wrong With The Celtics ?
January 8, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

Ever since their Christmas Day loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Boston Celtics have looked like a completely different team. Flat. Old. Disinterested. Are just a few adjectives used to describe the Celtics play as of late. After losing six out of their last eight; is it time to make a change ?
The Tony Allen experiment must come to an end. He’s not a suitable replacement for James Posey. Why not ship Allen out of town and call-up Bill Walker or J.R. Giddens, who are tearing it up in the NBADL ? The C’s desperately need a shot of energy that only a young guy could bring to a team. They’ve hit the proverbial wall and needed a bit of a wake-up call. They were playing so emotional for the first 29 games of the season and perhaps they needed to tone it down a bit and rest up a bit for the playoffs. But their play as of late has been lacking across the board. Instead of being the bully like they were all of last season and the first 29 games of this season, the Celtics are getting beaten up by teams.
There is very little they can do in terms of a trade due to the salary cap. Perhaps adding a Stephon Marbury, or hoping that Joe Smith gets cut is just the type of player they need to get over this hump they are on. There has been talk that Big Shot Bob, Robert Horry would consider joining the C’s when he decides to return this season. As of late, there has been way too much Brian Scalabrine in the lineup. The teams bench other than Leon Powe, Glen “Big Baby” Davis and Eddie House is pathetic. If they are to win another NBA Championship, or just get home court advantage for the playoffs a move must be made.
Hopefully, this Friday when the Boston Celtics take on the LeBron James led Cleveland Cavaliers on national TV, they return to their old, loud and emotional self. This game is perhaps the wake-up call this team needs.
Is It Time To End The Tony Allen Experiment ?

From Mike Fine:
The bench needs some direction. Tony Allen is a disaster with the ball. He ranks 39th in the NBA in turnovers per 48 minutes (4.1) and 300th in assists/turnovers ratio (.73). Leon Powe isn’t nearly as effective scoring the ball as last season and Doc Rivers is so desperate for scoring off the bench that he’s given Glen Davis a full go-ahead to shoot the elbow jumper. A brute who scored 16 points in the paint in the final quarter of a win at Detroit last season is now shooting at a .373 clip. Eddie House has done a nice job as a shooting guard, but he’s not a quarterback, and Gabe Pruitt is, at the moment, strictly a garbage time performer.
For those reasons, Marbury makes sense. If he can wriggle his way out of his Knicks contract, he can be very useful to the Celtics, who can later thank him for several months of service before he parts ways in search of his next big payday.
In one word: YES!
