Kansas City Chiefs To Be Interested In Scott Pioli
December 17, 2008 by Mike

Year in and out, when an NFL team has an opening at the President or General Manager position, immediately Patriots GM, Scott Pioli’s name is thrown out there. The latest team to be interested in Pioli is the Kansas City Chiefs, whose GM, Carl Peterson is to resign at seasons end. The Kansas City Star reports, that Pioli would be the ideal candidate to run the Chiefs. But each year when a team asks to speak with Pioli, he declines. Even when he has been offered more money. That happened when the Seattle Seahawks who in 2005, offered Pioli around $2 Million a year and the ability to run the team, he musn’t been a fan of coffee. People believe that eventually Pioli will want to get out of the Bill Belichick shadow and run his own team. But he wasn’t interested in going to the New York Giants, one thinks he won’t be interested in the Chiefs either. More from the Kansas City Star:
Clark Hunt wouldn’t identify any possible candidates to replace Carl Peterson as Chiefs general manager. Hunt, the Chiefs’ chairman, did reveal a list of qualities he’s looking for in Peterson’s replacement.
“I want somebody who’s a shrewd evaluator of football talent,” Hunt said. “(His) job will be 24/7 to think about the football team. That’s the most important quality. Obviously I’m looking for a strong leader, a good communicator, preferably somebody who has experience in building a winning NFL team.”
Though he was speaking generically, he could have been describing Scott Pioli, New England’s vice president of player personnel. Pioli, 43, could wind up as Hunt’s primary target.
Pioli has had many chances to interview for general-manager openings around the league and declined many. He could be lured by the Chiefs, who would likely offer the same autonomy to run the football operation that was given to Peterson.
Pioli probably would embrace the emphasis on youth that Hunt said would continue in Kansas City.
“If you look at the league, the franchises that struggle to be winners on a consistent basis … are ones that are reactionary and ones that pursue a certain direction for two or three years, and because they haven’t had the success they’d like, they change and go in a different direction,” Hunt said. “I don’t think that lack of continuity helps you win.”
