The pride of Northeastern University, Jose Juan Barea has been called many things in his life: too small, can’t shoot, not a point guard, but something he has never been called is a “Mexican smurf “. That according to LAist, is what Los Angeles Times NBA columnist Mark Heisler called Barea when doing his NBA rankings. One other problem with the remark that Heisler made about Barea, other than the racial undertone, is the fact that Barea is Puerto Rican and not Mexican. Heck, all Heisler had to do was Google Barea and he would have found out he was in born in the land where Oscar De La Hoya( That bastard cost me big bucks when he got Schultzed by Pacquiao) now calls home. Jeez, you see a tan skin guy and Dallas and think he’s Mexican. I mean, it not like we call Dice-K, Chinese, well, sometimes, only when I’m throwing my shoe at the TV and calling him racist names. That’s the only time it is allowed, during sporting events. More from Laist:

While filling in for injured starter Josh Howard, the Dallas Mavericks’ Jose Juan Barea surprisingly strung together four straight double-figure scoring efforts including a 22 point performance against the Atlanta Hawks on December 9th. The unexpected output of the 5-11 guard in his third year out out of Northeastern University has not gone unnoticed by the NBA media, including Los Angeles Times NBA columnist Mark Heisler. Yesterday, Heisler recognized the play of Barea in his NBA Rankings, calling the Dallas guard a “Mexican smurf.” While “smurf” isn’t exactly the most becoming word to call a sub-six-footer it is actually the more accurate of the two words used by Heisler to describe Barea, who is a native of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.
