Pedro Martinez
May 20, 2008 by Mike
The greatest pitcher in Boston Red Sox history is considering retirement following the 2008 season. Pedro Martinez, may have to retire to spend time with his ailing father who is dying from brain cancer. Martinez was the game’s greatest pitcher since Sandy Koufax. We may never see a year as good as we did in 1999 when Martinez went 23-4 with 313 strikeouts and a 2.07 ERA. It’s a sad day when Baseball loses one of it greatest pitchers and personalities it has ever seen. Pedro says he knows it not his time to leave the game, but he might be forced too:
“It’s taking a toll on me and my family, my dad’s situation,” Martinez said, referring to a form of brain cancer afflicting his 78-year-old father, Pablo. “I haven’t been there for them. I just realized that between last year and this year I haven’t been there for my family, my parents.
“That’ll probably drag me away from the game a little sooner than people expect.
“After this season, I’m going to go back home and think about it and I’m going to decide.”
