What Favre To The Jets Means
August 7, 2008 by Mike
So with the trade of Brett Favre to the Jets, they are presumeably a better team. That is still to be determined in the near future. However, should the AFC and the AFC East be worried of the Jets ? Not as much as Jets fans hope. The Jets did upgrade their team in the offseason with the signing of Alan Faneca and trading for Kris Jenkins. They spent over $140 Million Dollars this offseason trying to upgrade their roster. Not to mention they drafted Vernon Gholston with the 6th pick in the NFL Draft. Word from Jets camp is that Gholston has been really struggling trying to pickup what the Jets want him to do. The Jets also signed Calvin Pace to a 6-year $42 Million Dollar contract, that has been viewed as largely over paying for the pass-rusher who has a career 14 sacks. Might not be the best investment. But, just yesterday the Jets acquired the Messiah, whom is suppose to propel the Jets to the top of the division and perhaps the AFC. I think not.
Brett Favre might not be what the Doctor ordered for the Jets. Favre has been largely inconsistent throughout the last few years. Last season was his best year since 2004, he still does throw some pretty bad interceptions, but he does also have the ability to make a play that can “wow” you. However, in the postseason Favre has been just plain bad. In the last 10 years in the playoffs Favre has a record of 5 wins and 7 losses and he has thrown 21 touchdowns and 21 interceptions, and besides last year he hasn’t gotten his team out of the divisional round since 1998. Those numbers don’t exactly light you on fire. So why did the Jets trade for Favre ? He gives them sex appeal, something they have been lacking for a long time. Now, they will be on national TV a lot more, garner more viewers and simply generate more interest in a team that has been lacking that for years. Can he lead them to a Super Bowl ? No, but he now makes the Jets a relevant team in New York and in the NFL. The Jets still will have a very difficult shot of making the playoffs, they have to compete in a tough AFC East with the Patriots and young, but good Buffalo Bills. Come September 14, we shall see what Brett Favre and the Jets can do against the best the AFC has to offer.

The only good thing about Favre joining the jets is that the betting line may go down about a point. Week 2 Pats -10 1/2
