Sam Cassell Is Coming Back….Gulp!
September 11, 2008 by Mike
If you didn’t get enough of Sam Cassell’s poor play last year, you now will have another season to watch him attempt at running the offense, and then after that he will become your assistant coach according to the Baltimore Sun. I guess Danny Ainge just wanted to make the 82 game regular season a bit more interesting. With the re-signing of Eddie House, and the continued development of second-round pick Gabe Pruitt, most people believed that the return of Cassell was about as likely as Pam Anderson riding herself of hepatitis. Although, the addition of Cassell as an assistant coach in the 2009-2010 season would be an excellent addition. The point guard has an excellent basketball IQ, which he may not also exhibit. The Celtics could be doing a Dallas Mavericks like move with Cassell, were they had Avery Johnson as an assistant under Don Nelson and when he left Avery became the coach. With the extension of Doc, and rumors about him eventually going back in TV, its not out of the realm of possibility that in 2011 Sam Cassell could be your head coach. More from the Baltimore Sun:
Baltimore native and three-time NBA champion Sam Cassell said today he plans to become an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics after playing one more season.
Cassell, a 38-year-old guard who was part of the Celtics’ title run this year, told a reporter about his plans shortly before speaking at a City Hall news conference. “This is my last year playing with the Celtics,” he said. “Next week, I’ll sign the contract.”
After finishing the 2008-09 season, he plans to exercise an option to join the coaching staff. “I am playing this year,” he said. “After that, I have the option to do coaching for them.”
