Pedro Wants Manny On The Mets

This should come as no surprise, that former Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez wants old pal Manny Ramirez to end up in a Mets uniform before the July 31st deadline ends. It’s a long-shot at best. The Mets and the Phillies have each denied any interest in Ramirez, but other reports are contradictory to each teams statements of no interest in the left fielder. For one, each team wants to get Manny on the cheap, and does not want to get in a bidding war, because the acquisition for Ramirez would give either team the upper edge of winning the NL East. With the comments of Pedro, and the pure stupidity of Omar Minaya, the Mets maybe the team willing to go the distance to get Manny. Pedro told the NY Post:

“He can play on my team any day,” Pedro said last night when asked about the talk that refuses to die of his former Boston mate becoming a Met.

Sources say a deal to bring Ramirez to Queens remains unlikely, mainly because the Amazin’s most likely would have to part with center fielder Carlos Beltran or decimate their farm system.

If the Red Sox were to take prospects, they almost surely would want prized lefty Jon Niese or outfielder Fernando Martinez – two players the Mets continue to insist are untouchable.

The time frame to swing a deal also is running short, considering tomorrow is the non-waiver trade deadline. That doesn’t leave much opportunity to swing what would be an intricate deal because Ramirez has a no-trade clause.

But Met GM Omar Minaya has never hidden his fondness for the 36-year-old Ramirez, despite Ramirez’s notorious flakiness.

Plus, it’s a win-now league, and Minaya – who already has fired a manager this season – is feeling pressure to win now.

“Omar loves Manny,” a team source said yesterday. “If there’s even the slightest chance to get him, [Minaya] is at least going to look into it.”

“Manny is a great teammate and a great human being, too,” Martinez said

As the deadline approaches this will get very interesting. The Mets nor the Phillies have too much to offer, perhaps getting Carols Beltran, or a package of Fernando Martinez, Aaron Heilman, and other prospects would interest the Sox from the Mets. The Phillies would offer the Red Sox Pat Burrell and top catching prospect Lou Marson. Neither deal is overwhelming, but it may not make a difference, the Sox may just want to rid themselves of the maniacal one.
