Johnny Pesky To Have His Number Retired

In Steve Buckley’s article in today’s Boston Herald he quotes a source within the Red Sox that says “meetings were held last night and again this morning to address how and when a player’s number should be retired. The team plans to hold a press conference today or tomorrow to announce the change in policy, with all signs pointing to the dramatic news that Pesky’s uniform No. 6 will be retired before the end of the regular season”. This is a clear changing of the guard for the Red Sox, who have one of the most rigid restrictions for having a players number retired. Pesky certainly isn’t a Hall of Fame player, and he may have cost the Red Sox a World Series in 1946 when he held the ball and allowed Enos Slaughter to score, which resulted in the St Louis Cardinals winning the World Series. But what separates Pesky is that he is Mr. Red Sox, he’s been in the organization for over 57 years and is loved by everyone. He’s an iconic figure in the New England area. He’s to the Red Sox with Yogi Berra is to the Yankees. He is the Red Sox. He’s much deserving and they waited too long to do this. To make things even better when his number is expected to be retired this Saturday against the New York Yankees, it will be the 89th birthday for Pesky.
