Pats add the man who drafted Vince Young

The Patriots added Floyd Reese as a senior advisor to help Nick Caserio who is the director or player personel. Reese, a 31 year football veteran, ran the Oilers/Titans for 13 years from 94-06.  He was also responsible for drafting the man, the myth, the lengend Vince Young. Reese had this to stay:

“It’s different from a lot of situations – this organization doesn’t need a lot of fixing.  They are in pretty good shape, so I think my objective is to come in and do whatever I can do to help Mr. [Robert] Kraft and Bill win another world championship.”

Thunder Tom Brady is Back on Track

012809 brady329 1233131912 7443 Thunder Tom Brady is Back on Track

The Boston Globe is reporting that Tom Brady is on schedule to start the opening game of the 2009 season.  I assume that they are reporting this because of the topless photos of him in Mexico from this past week.  More from Boston.com

TAMPA – Tom Brady is progressing on pace in his rehabilitation from reconstructive left knee surgery and is now dropping back and throwing passes, according to a medical source familiar with the Patriots quarterback’s case.

No additional surgical procedures are planned, according to NFL and medical sources.

Since Brady suffered a postoperative infection, there was concern that the damaged knee would require more surgery to deal with the buildup of scar tissue and other possible complications that could prevent him from being ready for the 2009 season.

The medical source said Brady is “on track to be fine for the opening game of the season.

“Based on anybody else doing an ACL rehab, he’s going right along. He had a shaky start, but he’s caught up,” said the source.

Do Not Re-Sign Varitek!

January 26, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

I think I might be the only one in this boat, but I do not want the Red Sox to re-sign Jason Varitek unless he is the backup or he gets a non-guaranteed invite to spring training.  I cannot stand hearing all the mush heads assigning arbitrary attributes to Varitek that you cannot prove. It aggravates me to no end hearing people call Derek Jeter a “winner” he hasn’t won anything in 8 years or saying that Jose Offerman was the best in baseball going back on pop-ups.

Peter Gammons writes in his blog today:

Scott Boras demonstrated his genius by actually getting his spokesmen to report that he couldn’t take arbitration for Jason Varitek because the Red Sox might have released him, which would never have happened. Period. Yes, Varitek will be 37 in April, and only six catchers have ever caught 100 games in a season at the age of 37, but he’s a huge part of the Red Sox’s pitching staff, can platoon with and mentor whomever the Red Sox acquire, and the last time he was a free agent asked Boras to give the Red Sox every opportunity to re-sign him out of loyalty to the organization. His declining $10 million-$12 million in arbitration meant that the market establishes the price, and that is just what has happened.

Is he really that important to the pitching staff?  Would Dice-K & Josh Beckett retire if they couldn’t pitch to Varitek?  His OPS has declined so bad over the last three years and he is now at a point that you assume he is going to make an out every single at bat.  Giving him one year would be stupid, giving him a second year option that is triggered by games played would be even more ridiculous.  The Red Sox have been very good about walking away from players when the time was right: Pedro, Johnny Damon, Trot Nixon. They are letting emotion dictate this decision to resign this stiff.  By giving out all this unnecessary money, John Henry will complain that they do not have the resources to take on a contract at the deadline to improve the team.

Celtics to sign Marbury?

January 26, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

Marbury is washed up and is an ego, but for some reason I think he can help the Celtics.  Eddie House or Gabe Pruitt cannot be the backup point guard if the Celtics want to win in the playoffs.  They can bring Marbury in for very short money and if he acts like a douche, they can cut him.

Espn is reporting:

Stephon Marbury said the Boston Celtics have expressed a firm commitment to sign the exiled New York Knicks point guard who hasn’t played since last April, according to Monday’s editions of the New York Post.

Marbury’s comments confirm an ESPN.com report on Jan. 1 that Celtics management is intent on signing him if he can reach a buyout agreement with the Knicks.

According to the Post, Marbury complained the Knicks have not agreed to buy out his contract because they don’t want him contributing to a championship run with the Celtics.

Marbury told the Post the Knicks were playing “kids games,” and “It’s got to be personal.”

“The question to be asked to the Knicks is: Are they fearful for me playing for another Eastern Conference team?” Marbury said, according to the paper. “My thing is, they shouldn’t be fearful. They’re trying to get under the cap for 2010. They shouldn’t be worried about me.”

The Knicks play the Celtics for the fourth and last time this season in New York on Feb. 6.

“You had guys saying I was a distraction, I’m a cancer,” Marbury said. “If I’m all those things, wouldn’t you want me to go to another team?”

Marbury, in his last year of a contract that pays him $21 million this season, told the Post another NBA team has also expressed interest in signing him upon release. According to the paper, the Miami Heat have Marbury in their sights.

“I know I’ll be able to sign with two teams,” Marbury told the Post.

A brief flirtation between Marbury and the Greek team Olympiacos appeared to end Friday, a day after the team contacted the Knicks as part of its efforts to find a replacement for the injured American Josh Childress, sources told ESPN.com’s Chris Sheridan.

“It shouldn’t matter that I go to Boston if you’re the eighth seed and Boston is in the front,” Marbury told the Post. “It can’t be about money. The Knicks got plenty of it. It’s got to be personal. If it’s personal, then how is business being done there?”

Blind Item

From CBS Sports:

A recruit out West who ended up in the Pac-10 a few years ago charged schools $10,000 just to get him on campus for an official visit. I know the kid’s name — he’s in the NBA now — and I know the school he chose, but I don’t have it nailed down to the point where I can fill in those blanks for you, and odds are good that I never will. Several coaches have told me about the $10,000 price tag, including one coach who told me he turned that offer down, but there is no proof. Do I believe it? Absolutely. Can I prove it? Absolutely not. Not without one of the coaches’ help, and that’ll never happen.
