Red Sox To Offer Varitek Arbitration
December 1, 2008 by Mike
According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox will offer catcher Jason Varitek arbitration today, so that if he signs somewhere else they would receive two additional draft picks. However, don’t be surprised if Varitek accepts arbitration and gets somewhere between $7- $10 Million dollars for next season and tries to up his value for next seasons free-agency. It’s unlikely that Varitek will command a three or four-year deal for $8-$10 Million dollars a season that he and agent Scott Boras covet. Accepting the arbitration offer from the Red Sox just might be Tek’s best bet to cash in somewhere this offseason. The market for Varitek looks awfully small this winter and if he wants that Jorge Posada like deal, he’ll be waiting a long time.
